It is well known that UVA/UVB rays accelerate premature aging and skin cancer. Sunscreen has always been the solution, but some ingredients commonly found in popular sunscreens – oxybenzone, octinoxate, and nano titanium dioxide, to name a few – are toxins known to harm ocean waters and aquatic wildlife. Jamie’s background was revealing of his new role at IBKÜL. He was the third generation in his family to work in the “rag trade,” with his grandparents making clothes in New York’s famous Garment District. In college, he was a competitive wrestler. He worked in education as a teacher before becoming an athletic director. He knew sports and sportswear inside and out, with a keen eye for sewing and quality craftsmanship.
Later in his career, Jamie discovered an amazing new textile technology that interacted with sweat, cooling the body by three to five degrees. Not only was this cooling interaction unique, but the fabric’s texture wicked moisture three times faster than usual, promoting rapid sweat evaporation and leaving the wearer dry and cool at the same time.
Jamie quickly got hold of a pullover and tested it on the golf course with friends on a hot summer day. At the end of the round, his friends, covered in sunscreen, were sweating heavily. Jamie recalls that despite his long sleeves, he stayed cool and dry, even under the arms and on his back. No sweat marks were visible, and he noticed the softness of the fabric, feather-light and breathable.
Named Iceƒil, Jamie presented this textile as a sun-protective fabric, a key element of IBKÜL’s design philosophy.
